Hours on Tv/Computer/Video games?
March 19th, 2010 Posted in TV On PC FAQ
What is the average amount of time per week American children ages 11-16 spend on the above?
What is a healthy or responsible hours per week for the above?
I’m asking all this because my mom says that I should be only allowed to play computer for 1 hour a week, and I think this is a bit absurd. No I’m not wanting something extreme like 50 hours a week just think 1 hour is a bit crazy. Yes I know my mom choice is the best because she loves me blah blah blah I just want an answer!

I am a mother of two kiddos. In our home, 60 minutes (sometimes more, if I am being lazy) of computer games and TV (total) is a normal daily allotment. This assumes that the child has done his or her schoolwork and chores.
That being said, it is up to your mom. Perhaps you could make a presentation (seriously) to her lobbying you case for more screen time. Maybe you could do extra chores to earn more computer time. Normally, I am not big on helping kids to get more screen time, but 1 hour per week is pretty limited (not that that is a bad thing!).
If you want to play a game that requires more than an hour at a time, perhaps you could ask your mom for permission to bank your screen time to do that. My husband plays certain games online that require his time for a couple of hours (they are multi-player games, and the other players are counting on his time commitment). Still, his family commitment are always more important than his "game time."
You should let your mom know that you think her ruling is paramount. That shows and INCREDIBLE amount of maturity.

research says that when watching the screen the image changes constantly and the mind has to learn to keep up with the processing of the images and if you are doing alot looking at the fast moving images then your brain is going to stay in that mode even when your not looking at the screen.
thats why its favorable for children, teens and even adults to limit tv and computer time to 1 hour to 2 hours tops daily.
thats pushing it. heck I am forced to spend that just doing homework for school with typing essays and internet research.
I totally agree with the buying computer time with chores method. me and my 12 year old son do that. he has to do his homework and chores for his daily hour on the net and if he does the laundry and mows the yard then he will get 2 hours but no more than that a day.
hope this helps and good luck your mom is only thinking of your brain cells

Wiht me I have no limit but I would’nt set a time for my future children as long as they’re not on there 24/7. 1 hour is pretty stupid I spend about 3+ hours on the computer per day. I would just let them do their own thing.

Well the pediatricians all told me that 1 hr a day is the max amount recommended for children to be watching tv or playing game on the tv or computer.
