You can hook up any TV to your computer provided you have the right hardware, though some TVs give such poor image quality the question is whether or not it’s worth the expense.
If you have an old analog TV set that only takes composite or S-video, it’s NOT worth using as a computer monitor. They are only capable of low resolutions and give a crappy, fuzzy image. There is no point in spending all that money for a video card or TV tuner/capture card just to get a crappy image on that old TV.
If you have a newer HDTV of recent vintage with HDMI or VGA ports, then it’s worth it because those are capable of high resolutions and will give a good image due to the quality of the HDMI or VGA signal.
An HDTV’s HDMI port can be connected to a DVI port on a computer using a DVI-to-HDMI cable. (yes, HDMI is compatible with DVI). This gives the best image quality because DVI / HDMI is a digital signal.
For computers that only have an old VGA port, those can be connected to any HDTV that also has a VGA port. This is not as good as DVI / HDMI because VGA is analog, but is the next best option.
For HDTVs with HDMI or VGA ports, you hook them up to your video card like you would any other monitor, and your computer will treat them as monitors. Simple.
