I’ve recently lost my job and am looking for a few things to cut back on, one of which is my $ 80 cable bill. I was wondering if anyone knows of a free way to use your computer like a TiVO/DVR and be able to watch/record live tv? And if that’s possible, is it free or do I have to buy some kind of software?

You can try getting a TV tuner card. You can usually record TV shows from the software it comes with, or use Windows Media Center (Windows Vista and 7 Premium/Ultimate).
Otherwise, you can use Hulu, cbs.com and other video streaming sites. There’s torrent too, if you want to watch movies.
